News/Special Events

HDC is partnering with the University of Tampa’s PEACE Volunteer Center on 8/25/17 for a fun afternoon of community service! There are a number of nonprofit organizations in the Tampa Bay area like us that rely on the constant support of volunteers. This is a great opportunity for new students to meet and work with continuing students as well as faculty and staff.
UT volunteers will be helping to beautify the area outside of of Seffner group homes by planting Jasmine along the exterior fencing.

We want to recogize the Special Day Foundation (SDF) who will be taking five clients from HDC on a four hour deep sea fishing trip next week. This is a wonderful organization!
What is SDF?

Special Day Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit based in the Sarasota/Bradenton area of Florida, provides opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities to experience the physical, therapeutic and social value of nature-based recreational activities and spe…cialized dental care.

SDF is uniquely situated among the region’s foundations because of its founders’ long time involvement with special needs people.

The Foundation took on the challenge of very limited resources available to special needs people in the sunshine state.

The Special Day Foundation began its mission in 2008.

Imagine how hard the holidays are when you are alone, abandoned by family, and without anything to look forward to under the tree at Christmas.

This is the unfortunate scenario for many developmentally disabled adults at the Human Development Center in Tampa.

We are the Human Development Center, a local 501 C (3) dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, and behavior disorders.

As a non-profit, especially in these difficult economic times, we often must look to our surrounding community to provide each of our 40+ clients with a Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday Dinner to remember, and let them know they have not been forgotten with a special gift for each of them under the tree.

If you or your business is looking for a worthy local charity to support this holiday season, please consider HDC. Current opportunities include:

• $4,000 HDC Holiday HERO Sponsor – your donation would include sponsorship of all HDC clients (40) and group homes for the holidays, an average of $60 worth of Christmas Presents for each client, and a Christmas and Thanksgiving Dinner Feast.

• $500 HDC Holiday House Sponsor – your donation would include sponsorship of 6 HDC clients at one of our six group homes, Christmas Presents for each client, and a Christmas and Thanksgiving Dinner.

• $50+Donations- HDC Holiday Helpers – we welcome and appreciate donations of any amount that will be used towards the holiday season events.

HDC attends FABA Conference

This year, four members of the HDC Behavior Team were able to attend the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Florida Association for Behavior Analysis (FABA), held in Jacksonville. Attending such conferences is extremely important in our field for several reasons. First, it allows Behavior Analysts to earn continuing education units (CEUs). These CEUs are required to maintain the board certification, which is necessary to provide services to our clients. Second, while attending the sessions, they are staying abreast of the latest developments in research and community applications related to behavior analysis, learning from fellow practitioners, and sparkling ideas that could eventually be implemented with our clients and the challenges that they face. Finally, it is always an opportunity to meet other providers and network, creating bonds by sharing success stories as well as bumps in the road, discussing potential referrals, and brainstorming ways to better serve our consumers during these difficult financial times.

The Human Development Center, Inc. (HDC), together with the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union and Publix Super Market Charities and in cooperation with Hillsborough County Public Schools, awarded the 17th Annual Praeceptor Award and $5,000 cash prize to Amanda Harris of Clark Elementary in a ceremony and dinner held on May 17, 2012 .

Praeceptor Award Finalists included: Maria Rivas of Lopez Elementary and Janelle Garden of Claywell Elementary.

The award recognizes special education teachers who practices in the classroom are similar to those used at HDC. HDC uses principles of behavior analysis to promote independence and success to their adults clients with developmental disabilities and recognizes the importance of individual teachers who are utilizing many of these same cutting edge techniques in their classrooms. Those principles include: positive reinforcement, integration, normalization, replacement behaviors and goal setting.

Other recognitions at the event included:

Novus Praeceptor Award and $1,000 cash prize to Ms. Rebecca Nance of Willis Peters Exceptional Center. and Finalist Heidi Gomez of Adams Middle School.

(The Novus award was created for those Præceptor  Award Nominees who are relatively new to the special education field. Teachers with five years or less experience in special education are not yet eligible for the Præceptor Award however they most definitely exemplify what the Præceptor Awards is about and these teachers will surely make an impact in the future).

As the guardian of Lake Thonotosassa Chamber of Commerce Building, the Human Development Center wants to engage as many people as possible in the restoration, protection, beautification and promotion of one of Thonotosassa’s most tangible links to the past. Donations of any amount will help ensure that this historical building is available for future generations to enjoy.

As part of the Chamber’s 100 year celebration in 2014, The Human Development Center, Inc.’s goal  is to raise $25,000 in matching funds for a local historic preservation grant to  restore the Lake Thonotosassa Chamber Building*a  connection to our area’s historic beginning. Here is how you can be a  part of  it!

As a financial supporter, you can feel assured that HDC is using your gift to its fullest potential. We welcome support from individuals, corporations, grants and foundations as we work towards completing the restoration process. HDC  is also actively promoting the Chamber’s use by the public. As a non-profit organization we are not be able to accomplish our mission without the support of donors and friends like you. Contributions are tax deductible as allowable by law, and you will receive documentation for tax purposes.

We are also looking for in-kind donations for the project as well such as: pump repair, bathroom repairs, and the exterior tables moved.

HDC Joins Penn’s Pals for the day…

A special thank you to Donald Penn #70 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for his recent donation of 24 player tickets to the 9/25/11 Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Atlanta Falcons game. For most of the clients in attendance this was their first NFL experience and a very special reward.  Both the clients and supervising staff helped cheer the Bucs on to a  16 to 13 win over the Falcons, hmm… Could HDC be the Bucs good luck charm?

Summer 2011

In June,  HDC activity calendars were full of many interesting activities for clients. Recently, clients and staff from Thatcher house enjoyed a day of horse back riding. Clients also enjoyed go cart racing and trips to the movies.

Clients also learned hurricane preparedness skills, activities included taking inventory, purchasing supplies, and practicing procedures during a  mock disaster.

In the woodworking workshop, clients have been learning how to make a variety of items, including this boat.

Clients seen here are seen making progress on the WII baseball game. We currently have one located at the Seffner Campus, but we would love to have one in each group home. If you are interested in contributing, please contact:
